Vegetables-Herbs-Fruits

Enjoy old-fashioned, fresh-from-the-garden taste when you pick your own home grown vegetables, herbs and fruits.  It’s easier than you think.  Most plants will grow in containers as well as a garden bed.  So even if you live in an apartment, you can still ‘grow your own’ and save yourself a trip to the produce department.

We carry over 70 varieties of herbs, 40 varieties of tomatoes, and 30 varieties of peppers in addition to cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, eggplant, cucumbers and dozens more.  If you want to check what’s in stock, just call.

Most of our herbs are organically grown from Gilberties Herb Gardens. We also carry heirloom and old world varieties of vegetables, many of those also grown organically.

NEW!  Hickory Grove is now part of the Burpee Home Gardens program!  We are offering a wide selection of Burpee vegetable, fruit  and herb varieties grown on the premises to enhance your garden this season.

Hickory Grove’s selection of small fruits includes raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, cranberries, currants, elderberries, gooseberries,  rhubarb, strawberries and grapes.  Many of these plants can be incorporated into your landscaping as long as the area receives six or more hours of sun a day.

Things to remember when growing vegetables in pots:  When selecting a container, remember that bigger is better.  You want a pot that is going to allow the roots to grow and not tip over as the plant matures.  A half whiskey barrel or a terra cotta pot of a similar size will do.  Remember to choose a pot with proper drainage holes.  And only use fresh potting soil, always discarding previous year’s soil, as it may contain diseases, weed seeds or insect eggs.  Fertilize every two weeks with a water-soluble fertilizer made for vegetables.

Planting in containers also allows  you to try many plant combinations.  Try a ‘salad combo pot’: leaf lettuce, bush cucumber and patio tomato.  Or give the ‘spaghetti sauce pot’ a try: patio tomato, oregano and basil.  Or make your own ‘pizza party pot’:  an Italian-type (paste/pear) tomato plant, green bell pepper, basil, thyme and an optional Jalapeno pepper! The delicious possibilities are endless!
