Dear Customers and Friends of Hickory Grove,
Although we are temporarily reopening June 5, I am saddened to tell you that Hickory Grove will eventually be closing after 103 years. After losing Jim in November and then dealing with the pandemic these last few months, I am more convinced than ever that I am doing the right thing. Updates will be posted to this website and our Facebook page.
It’s hard to believe that I have been a part of HG for 48 years; I started out as a transplanter when I was in junior high. When I married Jim, I became part of a ‘growing’ business in more ways than one. As much as I enjoyed helping my customers choose the right plants, I also enjoyed all the prepping and studying that came with each season: pouring through catalogs to find the best plants for our hanging baskets and containers while learning all the intricacies of growing those new plants, figuring out how to propagate a particularly difficult plant, finding sources for the plants our customers desired, and reading trade magazines to keep abreast of new trends, plants, and potential problematic insects. This was not just a job for my husband and me, it was a passion! Every day, season, year was a new learning experience.
As any plant nerd (you know who you are) will tell you, there’s something unexplainably satisfying about getting your hands dirty while working with plants. I plan on spending more time in my own yard and on my own houseplants; I can’t possibly quit cold turkey! I will also miss the smells of a greenhouse filled with newly planted seedlings, the evergreens that Jim spent countless hours cutting for our wreaths, and even a greenhouse full of extremely ripe hyacinths! But I will especially miss you, our customers and friends. So if you see me out and about, please don’t hesitate to ‘talk shop’ with me. Alternatively, you can message me on Facebook.
I would like to thank everyone who helped make Hickory Grove a success: family, friends, employees (who were more like an extended family), salespeople, and you, our customers. I especially want to thank my close friends and family because without their help and support, these past 7 months would have been unbearable.
I wish you all the best in your indoor and outdoor gardening endeavors, and I hope Hickory Grove has helped fuel your passion along the way. As Jim was so fond of saying, ‘It’s cheaper than therapy!’
